About
DEBURAU is a project focusing on conducting research and showing its outcome through picturing myself investigating the sounds present in a landscape.
Through a series of photographs and a moving image piece, the audience will be presented with metadata to better understand the outcome of the experiment. DEBURAU acts as a thin line between the document and fiction, playing aroundphotographic truth and narrative.
The project’s title refers to the audio effect, deburau, in which the listener’s attention searches for a sound that is inaudible. This effect characterizes the identification of a sound source followed by the observation that once discovered, it is no longer of particular interest.
In this project I utilized the camera as a neutral spectator, it is the lone witness of me conducting research alongside the first to witness itsoutcome. I also consider it as the lone truthful spectator of the experiment as even myself was in front ofthe lens. The research I conducted consisted of uncovering sounds that exist within the landscape, thesemay be inaudible to the neutral ear and sometimes may need to be ‘provoked’ to be heard.
Equipped with a sound recorder and headphones, I dive into the picture frames to reveal these sounds and noises that are hidden in the photographs. These sounds are then compiled into a moving image piece that serves as a final report for my research.
