About

This Project, Flag, emerges from a collaboration with the British Antarctic Survey Archive, exploring the visual and symbolic legacy of Britain’s scientific presence in Antarctica. Drawing from archival imagery, I rework the Union Jack as a central motif, using images in which the flag appears to reflect on ideas of national identity, authorship, and scientific “conquest.”

The work was developed as part of a wider exhibition bringing together students, staff, and researchers from the University of Brighton across Photography and Digital Music and Sound Arts. Responding to the archive’s vast and varied material, artists produced new visual and sonic works through processes such as digital collage, darkroom printing, cyanotype, polaroid, AI collaboration, and multimedia installation.

Together, these works explore how archives can be reinterpreted, reactivated, and experienced beyond their original contexts, opening space for alternative narratives and sensory encounters.
